Esmonae has had her fair share of both triumphs and tribulations during her life. At only two weeks old, she was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia SS. Eleven months later, she suffered from her first pain crisis and was hospitalized for four days. Over the course of her life, she has made many trips to the hospital.

These trips resulted from: a mild stroke that caused her to lose control over her left arm, the placing of a Port-A-Cath which enables blood transfusions through an IV, the installation of yet another Port-A-Cath, and the removal of her gallbladder.

Esmonae is now a 16-year-old junior in high school. She loves cheering and was chosen as a Passport Scholar, traveling to Rochester, New York. She says that her experience at Children’s Hospital “has always been so great. I couldn’t imagine going to any other hospital other than Erlanger. I have become so close with all of the doctors and they treat everyone so well and always make sure that we’re doing our absolute best. I would never change anything about Erlanger.”
